“Danaos” Invites to Introspection and Re-examination of Values
The Hungarian State Theater "Csiky Gergely" in Timișoara presents on June 14, at 7 p.m., Sala Mare, the 6th premiere of the 2023/2024 season - "Danaos", directed by Szabó Kristóf, director and choreographer based in Germany.
Aeschylus' lesser-known tragedy, “The Suppliants”, explores what being an immigrant dependent on the hospitality of the host country for survival means. In such a situation, the human being can lose the moral support offered by their own culture, faith in God and trust in humanity. In Szabó Kristóf’s interpretation, the show is the story of political asylum seekers who slowly lose all of that, and focuses on the refugee status, a concept and, above all, such a current reality considering the sociopolitical context in which we find ourselves. Nowadays, the germ of Humanism seems to be called into question, while the spiritual legacies of Antiquity and the Renaissance risk remaining only a recollection. These matters are central to the actors' artistic quest (Aszalos Géza, Balló Helga, Bálint Előd, Borbély B. Emília, Vlad Colar, Erdős Bálint, Jancsó Előd, Kiss Attila, Kocsárdi Levente, Magyari Etelka, Mátyás Zsolt, Mihály Csongor, Molnos András Csaba, Tóth Karolina) who will pursue spiritual paths and surreal situations in hopes of an answer. The show not only explores the tragic themes of loss and the search for identity, but also reflects on the challenges of contemporary humanity. It is a call to reflection and an invitation to re-examine the values that define us. Through a dramatic and profound approach, the show offers an artistic perspective on the refugee crisis and the frailty of the human condition in the face of adversity.
Szabó Kristóf, who started his career as a writer and visual artist in Hungary, has become one of the most interesting figures in German cultural life as a director-choreographer and is currently the artistic director of the ensemble FAC.E. Visual Performing Arts Ensemble in Cologne. Throughout his career he has explored multiple artistic disciplines, theatre, dance, visual arts and mixed media, and has used sound, light and video projections to situate theatrical works in surprising contexts.
