PARALLEL CITY: FABRIC – A performance. A game. An app.

The „Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theater in Timișoara starts the new season with a premiere: „Parallel City: Fabric” is the second event in the Parallel City trilogy, developed by the CiviCultura project. Ana Mărgineanu (director) and Peca Ștefan (scriptwriter), together with Andreea Duță (choreography) and Cari Tibor (music), alongside with the actors of the „Csiky Gergely" Hungarian State Theater and those of the German State Theater in Timișoara, created a fabulous world full of mystery that spectators are invited to explore in an original way. The show will have its first performances on August 27th and 28th, 2022. The Parallel City: Fabric is part of the project Urban Dilemmas: The Parallel City developed by the Diogene Cultural Association in co-production with the „Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theater and the German State Theater Timișoara.

Last year we launched the idea of technology-mediated game, but this year we managed to develop a dedicated mobile application, with which the spectators can choose the character they want to follow in an attempt to solve the enigma”, reveals the playwright Peca Ștefan, author of the text Parallel City: Fabric.

The performance takes place on the Bega river, on the vaporetto, then in an interconnected labyrinth created at the New Millennium Reformed Center, an edifice designed by one of the most important European architects, Imre Makovecz, in the area known to locals as the Turkish Prince.

This year’s performance is a first for us as well. We have a unique and exciting combination between performative and exploratory components, that we have thought for a diverse audience, through the app spectators can access the stories in 4 languages: Romanian, Hungarian, German and English”, says the director Ana Mărgineanu.

The staging was done in record time, thanks to the total involvement of the creative team, consisting of: Peca Ștefan (text), Ana Mărgineanu (director), Molnos András Csaba (associate director), Kertész Éva (technical director), Cári Tibor (composer), Andreea Duță (choreographer), Albert Alpár (set designer), Radu Racz (sound designer), Sorin Mocanu (video) and the talented actors who are part of the cast: Tokai Andrea, Vajda Boróka, Olga Török, Balázs Attila, Borbély B. Emília, Csábi Anna, Daniel Ghidel, Enikő Blénessy, Hegyi Kincső, Jancsó Előd, Kiss Attila, Kocsárdi Levente, Lajter Márkó Ernesztó, Lőrincz Rita, Magyari Etelka, Mátyás Zsolt Imre, Silvia Török.

Moreover, with the help of Bianca Chiriac and Sergiu Lazin, the actors were transformed into illustrated characters, that the spectators can discover through the application developed together with the Politehnica University of Timișoara.

„Where did Flora disappear?” is the question to which we are invited to find the answer. The performances will start at 7 p.m. at the „Corneliu Coposu” vaporetto station, near the Decebal Bridge, and then continue at the New Millennium Reformed Center. Spectators are invited to come with a charged phone, preferably with an Android operating system, headphones and comfortable shoes.

Tickets are available on the website of the Hungarian State Theater Timișoara - https://ticket.tm-t.ro/ro and on the project’s website - orașulparalel.ro, where the application can also be downloaded.

The plays Parallel City: Iosefin (2021), Parallel City: Fabric (2022) and Parallel City: Elisabetin (2023) are part of a trilogy created by the director Ana Mărgineanu and the playwright Peca Ștefan, a series of immersive theater performances, unique, based on documentation in the 3 historical districts, that take the spectator through fictional stories. In these stories, the spectator is immersed in a parallel world through which he is guided by the actors to see the district/city through other filters, in an intense and original experience.

The performance Parallel City: Fabric is part of the Urban Dilemmas: Parallel City project developed by the Diogene Cultural Association in co-production with the „Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theater and the German State Theater Timișoara, in collaboration with the Politehnica University of Timișoara, with the support of the New Millennium Reformed Center, Timișoara Public Transport Society. The project is part of the Cultural Program „Timișoara 2023 - European Capital of Culture” and is financed by the Municipality of Timișoara through the Project Center.
